If you want evidence that Folk Heritage supports eclectic music, here you go…
Welcome back Kevin Roth, for an unique evening of original, traditional folk, and contemporary songs spotlighting his lap dulcimer and guitarcimer – an original instrument created specifically for Kevin that is half guitar/half dulcimer – and maybe some autoharp, or piano. His natural ease on stage, combined with his unique musical talent, makes Kevin stand out among entertainers.
Kevin’s credentials include a dozen Folkways/Smithsonian albums, the theme song for the TV show Shining Tie Station, two White House concerts (not with the current administration), and collaborations with Noel Paul Stookey. As of winter 2019, Kevin is finishing a new locally-produced album that will hopefully be ready for this show.
Fans of Balkan traditional singing may remember Mary Ann Downs and Marie Hayes from the quartet, Harmonija, and later, the international dance band, Eastern Exposure. They met young Stacey Barnett at Mendocino Balkan Camp in 2015, and were blown away by her powerhouse vocals. Stacey has mastered quite a wide variety of styles, including, but not limited to, jazz, opera, Americana, and Persian music, in addition to Balkan singing. She is presently also a member of the Persian intercultural collective, Dornob.
Together, they have formed Trio Zheni, which in Bulgarian means Trio of Women. Together, their voices weave a tapestry of mysterious and powerful harmonies in the Eastern European style. With their voices, and occasional accompaniment on the guitar, the mandolin-like tambura, and doumbek drum, the group delights in bringing the unique sounds and rhythms of timeless Eastern folk songs to Western ears.
